
CHANDIGARH, Oct 7: Government Model Senior Secondary Schools — sector 32 and 35 — enjoyed emphatic wins over their rivals on the opening day of the schools Shivalik Trophy cricket tournament here today.
GMSSS-32 beat St Anne’s Convent School-32 by eight wickets in a lop-sided contest while GMSSS-35 got past St Stephen’s School, Sector 45 by 24 runs in the second match.
Karamdeep took two wickets and later scored 21 runs for GMSSS-32 to star in their win. Ajit Singh contributed 26 runs for GMSSS-32. In the other match, Vikram shone for GMSSS-35, scoring 34 runs and chipping in with two wickets.
Scores: St Anne’s: 77 (Sanjeev 3-16, Anil Kumar 2-2, Karamdeep 2-11, Amit Kondal 2-11) lost to GMSSS-32: 78 for 2 (Ajit Singh 26, Karamdeep 21). GMSSS-35: 114 (Vikram 34, Dharmbir 23; Sunny Behl 3-24) beat St Stephen’s: 90 (Bhuvan 15; Vikram 2-13, Mohan 2-18).
Atray semifinals
Oil and Natural Gas Commission (Delhi) will meet Punjab Cricket Club while PUNCOM face Bishnoi Club in the semifinals of the fifth J P Atray Memorial cricket tournament.
The ONGC-PCC match will be played on October 10 while PUNCOM-Bishnoi encounter will be on October 11 at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium at S.A.S. Nagar near here. ONGC had defeated PCA Colts by 44 runs while PCC routed PSEB by nine wickets in the quarterfinal matches. Similarly PUNCOM had shown Chandigarh XI the door. However, Bishnoi Club were seeded direct in the semifinals.
The final of the tournament, carrying a cash prize of over Rs one lakh, will be played in the same ground on October 12.
Bhanot for Asian meet
Ravinder Kumar Bhanot, a senior football coach of Sports Authority of India will accompany the Indian schools football team as a referee for the 27th Asian Schools Football Championship being held at Korea (Chegu) from October 10 to 19. Ravinder had earlier, represented the Indian schools team as a technical observer and manager at the Asian school meets held at Jakarata in 1987 and Kuala Lumpur in 1993.
