KOLHAPUR, Aug 3: The Union Home Minister Indrajit Gupta on Friday strongly criticising the Maharashtra Government and the police for the `indiscriminate firing’ following desecration of Ambedkar statue in Mumbai, appealed the citizens to show maturity measuring up to the status given them in the Constitution.
Speaking on `fruits of 50 years of independence’ and `current trends of situation’ at Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagriha here, he said `human rights and peaceful agitation are included in the fundamental rights of the country’s constitution’ and pointed out that “we must know our rights and privileges as enshrined in the Constitution”.

He urged setting up `citizens committees’ to dig-up anti-social activities of corrupt politicians who had indulged in amassing huge amounts of unaccounted wealth. Citing the examples of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and suspended Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deputy commissioner G R Khairnar, he said the two had single-handedly challenged corrupt political leaders and were instrumental in forcing two ministers from the state cabinet to resign.
Meanwhile, BJP National General Secretary Pramod Mahajan addressing Bharaitya Janata Yuva Morcha (BYJM) on Friday lamented that the people of India had still not matured enough to ignore acts like desecration of statues.
“If a statue is found garlanded with shoes, people ought to immediately replace it with a garland of flowers and forget the former act as that of a madman,” he asserted, while inaugurating the BYJM convention of at the Reshimbagh ground, Nagpur, late Friday evening.
Fully agreeing to the fact that the Dalits have great love and respect for Dr Ambedkar, he observed, “As responsible citizens the people should have shown large-heartedness and maturity by ignoring the desecration as an act of madness. `’
`’The counter-reaction gives a perfect opportunity for political vested interests to destablise the State,” he warned.
