CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta has called for withdrawal of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in circulation as they help only the rich and promote black money circulation. In his latest tirade against the Government, Dasgupta says the Government should also fix a ceiling for fees that can be charged by doctors and lawyers especially in metros like Delhi and Mumbai.

Speaking to Express, Dasgupta said: ‘‘Lawyers and doctors should be brought under the income tax net just like private schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and religious institutions as a rural development cess. After all, God will not be angry if part of the income collected in his name is spent on poverty alleviation.’’

He also said the Government should move in the direction of imposing tax on farmers, especially the rich ones and farm house owners. ‘‘Only WB, Tripura and Kerala have undertaken land reforms and, in all other states, it is the rich farmers who are enjoying the benefit of not being taxed and I plead the government tax them,’’ he said.
