Wockhardt has received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to manufacture and market human insulin. However, the company is silent on the price of the product. The price of human insulin assumes significance since Eli Lilly had, in January, reduced the prices of its human insulin from Rs 218 to Rs 145 per vial.

Addressing a conference, Wockhardt vice-chairman Hari Mundra said, “We are ready to launch the product between the second and third quarters.” The human insulin market is estimated at Rs 250 crore and it is rapidly replacing the bovine and porcine insulin. Bovine insulin is available at Rs 75 per vial, while porcine insulin is available at about Rs 145 per 10 ml vial.
