CALCUTTA, JAN 17: Just a couple of days ago, Jai Prakash Yadav was being considered for a berth in the Indian probables list for World Cup by the national selectors. Eventually, he was rejected. Setting aside his frustration, JP Yadav produced a sterling performance, including a hat-trick, to fetch Madhya Pradesh their maiden Wills Trophy title at Eden Gardens today. Madhya Pradesh beat Bengal by 32 runs in a fluctuating final that took a decisive turn in the 18th over of the Bengal innings. It was Yadav’s third. Three wickets with the first three deliveries found Bengal fighting with their backs to the wall. Yadav picked up two more wickets to return a haul of five for 49 runs. Bengal, chasing 225, were bowled out for 193.

Put in to bat, the MP innings was controlled by Devendra Bundela who scored 80 off 118 balls, coming at number six. Amay Khurasia too came good with 57. Khurasia ended the Wills Trophy with a century and two half centuries. In reply, Bengal were two down for seven, but Debang Gandhi andRohan Gavaskar checked the slide. In fact, the run-rate was well over eight when they were together. The 87-run partnership came in just 57 balls. With overs aplenty, the Bengal batsmen only needed to apply themselves, which they did not. Saba Karim edged one to Sahu to become the first victim in Yadav’s hattrick. Ajoy Das went in a similar fashion off the very next delivery. Charanjit Singh found one cutting back sharply and was adjudged leg before.
