Keeping track of this week’s snakes and ladder score:
UP:
Mary Philip, widow of the late Olympian Joe Philip, who had to endure years of hardship after her husband’s death. News reports about her pathetic condition evoked sympathetic responses from the State Government and numerous private individuals, who have promised to help her financially and ease her burden.
Citizens, with the nation-wide week-long postal strike being finally called of. With this being the time for admissions to educational institutes and recruitments to jobs, people can now heave a sigh of relief.
Water Consumers, with the Maharashtra Industrial Development corporation (MIDC) reducing water prices from the recently hiked Rs 12 to Rs 9.50 per 1000 litres. With rising prices in every other sector, this is a welcome move by the MIDC. A little goes a long way, huh?
The Disabled, with Pune being the first city in the state to reserve parking space in prime locations for them. A plan has already been drawn up by the Directorate of Social Welfare to quicken the process.
Crime Detection, with the arrest of five youths by the Pune cantonment police which, it claims, has solved more than 40 cases of vehicle thefts in the city. The five would steal vehicles, take them for joyrides and abandon them when the fuel ran out. In their case, looks like luck finally ran out!
Celluloid History, with the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) introducing a new paper preservation technology that will give a new lease of life to more than 7,000 posters that have become part of our immense cinematic heritage.
Foreign Students, with the University of Pune (UoP) having decided to extend the deadline for the students to fulfill all their formalities. Earlier, the UoP had refused to ease its previous deadline, thus putting 600 foreign students’ admission at risk.
DOWN:
Road Safety, with the highway claiming the life of a teacher and grievously injuring eight students of the Agricultural College, Pune, as the jeep they were travelling in crashed into a truck. With a spate of similar accidents happening on the city’s roads and highways, traffic safety has taken a turn for the worse.
Image of City Cops, as three constables posted at the police headquarters, Shivajinagar, were arrested on charges of extortion. As the law-keepers set a price for breaking the law, let alone keeping it, it is time the Anti-Corruption Bureau tightened its act.
The University of Pune, which has far exceeded the time limit set by the Maharashtra Universities Act ’94, for declaring the results. With anxious students waiting for their results and their future at stake, the University must hurry things up.
