Murali Kartik has been officially promoted as the 12th man for the second India-Pakistan Test at Eden — not that he has much competition. The man who did that duty in the first Test at Ferozeshah Kotla was exempted this time around, and released officially from the team today morning to join his Punjab team against Bengal to play the Elite group match.
Yuvraj Singh took the flight to Siliguri today, after the decision was taken late last night. “It’s always nice to get some match practice rather than sitting out when you have a busy season coming up,” Yuvraj said before his departure. “Bengal are a good side and it will be a good match.”
Punjab coach Gursharan Singh also welcomed his return. “It’s always good to make optimum use of your good form. A good knock here can work wonders and also help him make a stronger claim for a Test berth ahead of the third Test. Yuvraj coming in is a boost for the team,” he said.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has now decided to release extra players from the national side so that they can play in domestic matches to stay match fit. It also adds to the luster and competitiveness of the domestic meets. Earlier, Ishant Sharma was released so that he could play for Delhi.
However, with the exit of Yuvraj and Ishant, India now have only 12 players here. Of course RP Singh is here too and some local players are on hand. But can anyone fill in for Yuvraj even as 12th man, given his ability as a fielder? That may remain a million dollar question.
