Pakistan Peoples Party’s co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari faces no threats to his life and cannot be provided the same level of security as his slain wife Benazir Bhutto, caretaker Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz Khan said on Wednesday.

“We have no report about threats to Zardari’s life. However, the government is in constant contact with the party regarding his security,” Khan said. “We cannot provide him as much security as was provided to Benazir Bhutto.”

The level of security provided to Bhutto was “never ever given to any politician of the country”, Khan told state-run APP news agency.

“Even Senior Superintendent of Police Major Imtiaz was deployed with her on her own request,” he said.

The PPP has sought enhanced security for Zardari in the wake of Bhutto’s assassination in Rawalpindi on December 27. It has also criticised the government for not doing enough to protect Zardari.

Khan said the Interior Ministry has asked Nawaz Sharif, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman and other politicians who have received threats to their lives to name the security personnel to be deployed with them.

A security advisory issued by the Ministry is aimed at providing general guidelines to political leaders for their safety and security, he said.
