MUMBAI, DECEMBER 5: Zeba Wadia exceeded expectations but kept her promise in breaking the National 100 metre breastroke record in the 54th National Aquatic Championships at the Andheri Sports Complex today.

short article insert The 16-year-old Mumbai girl hoped to do around 1:19 but timed 1:18:66 to lower Sajini Shetty’s four-year-old mark of 1:20:43 and fulfilled one half of her aim to own both 100m and 200m breastroke marks.

The first year junior college student of NM College then belied expectations by grabbing the silver medal (31.55s) in the 50 metre butterfly behind Richa Mishra’s (Police) 31.49s.

Shane Pedder completed a city double by retaining the 50m butterfly title but missed his own National mark (26.44) set in the Thiruvananthapuram two years ago. Pedder, who rarely competed after last year’s Bangalore Nationals, used his superior height he easily towered over the rest to win comfortably in 26.67s.

SH Hakimuddin (200m freestyle), Deepak Kumar (100m breastroke) and 14-year-old Shikha Tandon (200m freestyle)were the other winners on the opening day of the six-day event.

Shikha (2:11:34) was followed by Charu Misra (Police) and Mumbai’s Tejaswi Shetty with 2:20:70. Tejaswi, back after her 10th standard mid-term exams, put in barely 20 days practice while skipping a few meets that were held recently. Which, Tejaswi said, explained why she could not get anywhere close to her personal best timing.

Police’s Deepak Kumar started poorly as team-mate Harinder Singh took early lead, but made up after the first 50 metres. “Harinder is my closest challenger and he always starts well while I finish better,” said the Jamshedpur-born inspector, who recovered from illness 15 days back.Another one short on practice, Hakimuddin, won by the largest margin (1:58:81), leading from before the 100m mark while the other policeman Kailash Nath just could not catch up. The sub-inspector from Bangalore said his fourth semester engineering exams meant he had just a month’s training before coming here.
