Dyuty Bhattacharya is lucky compared to many others whose results got messed up. She secured 817 out of 1000 in the Std XII exams this year, the results of which were announced on July 18, but got zero in Bengali (Paper I). After the necessary ‘‘corrections’’, she got more than 60 marks. As many as 19 students got zero in some subjects despite securing first division in the others. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education as well as School Education Minister Kanti Biswas said in all the cases, the results have been corrected through a ‘‘special mechanism’’. They were also quick to lay the blame on computers. While the Council acted in the 19 cases, others like Deboki Ranjan Sil are yet to see their results corrected. Sil got three marks in both papers of Chemistry and Maths, 76 in Bengali, 66 in English and 82 in Physics.‘‘We decided to correct the results of the students who got zero in some subjects despite securing a total of 720 marks or above. The computers are to be blamed for the errors,’’ said council president J. Mukherjee. For others like Sil who secured less marks, another officer said, ‘‘They will have to approach our special cell and give us at least two months’ time.’’ School Education Minister Kanti Biswas said, ‘‘The computers are to be blamed.”
