MUMBAI, March 28: Zico Pele scored a slender 2-1 victory over Brothers XI to earn a pre-quarter-final meeting with Oberoi Towers in the 18th Bro Paulus Memorial football tournament at the St Francis D’Assisi School ground, Borivli, today.

Vilas Dongrekar gave Zico Pele the lead after they were awarded a penalty when Freddy Carvalho handled the ball in the 13 minute.

Brothers put up a gallant show and levelled terms in the 39th minute through Francis Fernandes.

But Praveen Dongrekar clinched the issue for Zico Pele when he found the target with a neat header in the 42nd minute.

Merchant in final

Yasin Merchant(-10), with small but useful breaks of 22, 26, 28, 35 and 66, defeated Farhad Tengra (+40) 83-61, 88-62, 94-51 in the semi-finals of the Anthony D’Cruz Open handicap snooker tournament, sponsored by TBZ Jhaveri Bazar and Bharat Petroleum, at the Catholic Gymkhana, today.

Khanna-Iyer score

Satish Khanna and V R Iyer defeated Dara Billimoria and R Sulaiman 6-2, 6-1 in the semi-finals of the Ram Batra Senior Citizen tennis tournament at the P J Hindu Gymkhana, today.

Bose-Bendre best

Capt D Bose and P Bendre came by their first success in the last competition of the season, the Prakash Verma Memorial Cup, at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club course, today. In the stableford event over 18 holes, the pair collected 46points. A point behind were Rajen Gandhi and Rani Goenka.

Inderjit Singh Saigal with plus three emerged a comfortable winner in the seniors bogey event. He was followed by S S Patel with minus one.

Addicts golf

The Addicts Golfing Society of Western India will be conducting their 80th Addicts golf championship at the United Services Club, Colaba, from April 4 to 5.

The format will be stableford – a team of four. Scores of the best three will be taken into consideration for declaring the winning team. All the four members of the team will receive prizes.

Veterans badminton

The G D Birla Memorial Veterans badminton tournament will be held at the Bombay Gymkhana courts from March 30 to April 4. The competition is being organised by Badminton 45 alongwith the Bombay Gymkhana. The tourney will be sponsored by Bhiwani Textiles Ltd.
