Cause and effect

An Organiser editorial calls the police action at Ramlila Maidan an “abominable misdeed” and likens it to the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. “The government has lost all credibility. It has lost the war on the public domain. The Congress stands thoroughly exposed and isolated as it is heading the most corrupt regime in India’s history,” it says. Another article claims the UPA is on its last legs. “Its reaction to Baba Ramdev’s challenge is as vicious as it is self-defeating. Vile behaviour symbolises the coming end. As is said by our ancient rishis: Vinasha kale viparita sbuddhi,” it argues. “Incessant attempts to link the yoga guru to the RSS,” it adds,“should be seen as part of the grand old party’s strategy to keep itself in power in perpetuity. The idea is not only to malign Ramdev but also to present the Sangh Parivar as demonic and anything connected with it,taboo… A fear psychosis is conjured up about ‘communalism’.”

short article insert Another article argues civil society’s aggression was the consequence of an insensitive regime; if the government doesn’t yield to popular demands on black money and the Lokpal bill, civil society will endorse Baba Ramdev’s idea of taking the battle to the government’s court.

Baba vs Baba

The current issue of Panchjanya is also dominated by articles and reports on Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev. An article, mocking Rahul Gandhi, questions whether the “yuvaraj”,who felt ashamed of being an Indian in Bhatta-Parsaul,was now feeling proud at the midnight police action against Ramdev and his supporters at Ramlila Grounds.

All in a name

The journal has a report on attempts to rename towns and cities in Jammu and Kashmir. It refers to reports that Srinagar is being contemplated to be changed to ‘Sheher-e-khas’. “The practice of changing names of towns and historical places in Jammu and Kashmir had started immediately after the partition of the country. The names of places in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir had been changed. Apart from renaming Kishanganga river as Neelum river and Krishna valley as Neelum valley, most of the villages in this area have been renamed,” the article says. “Now a similar pattern is emerging in Jammu as well. Here,Narwal has been renamed to Islamabad,Sanjwa has been changed to Jalalabad, and some other localities have been given names like Firdauspura,Ramzanpura and Kasim Nagar.”
