Better late
The worlds largest democracy has proved that justice delayed may not necessarily be justice denied. The involvement of BJP MLA Maya Kodnani and Bajrang Dal activist Babu Bajrangi in the Naroda Patiya massacre of 2002 has been proved in court (BJP MLA among 32 guilty in Naroda Patiya massacre,IE,August 30). The courts verdict has restored the common mans confidence in the nations system of justice. It has also helped dispel the fear that violence against religious minorities allegedly engineered by political interests,in the case of the Gujarat riots can shake the plurality of Indian society and threaten its democratic values. Finally, the recent judgment reiterated the importance of the judiciary in ensuring that minorities live in peace.

Best defence
APROPOS Sonia raises pitch, tells Cong MPs to fight BJP blackmail (IE,August 29),the Congress chiefs exhortation to members of her own party reminds me of an age-old saying: offence is the best form of defence. No government can afford to be autocratic and stamp out dissent any longer. Sonia Gandhi knows that the coal scam has put her and the Congress on the back foot, but she is still trying to show up the BJP. The leading opposition party may or may not be right in its strategy of stalling Parliament, but discussing the coal scam in the House may not be fruitful either. Meanwhile, the Congress should note that it has made a big mistake by undermining and criticising a constitutional office like that of the Comptroller and Auditor General.

Housing dissent
THIS refers to the editorial Back at you (IE,August 29). Perhaps the government should consider the suspension of those members of Parliament who obstruct the working of the House. It will ensure that Parliament functions smoothly again, allow other MPs to hold much-needed debates on key issues and handle urgent legislative business. Surely it does not suit the government to let Parliament be stalled?

Power and the glory
IT IS very important for the countrys young cricket
players to remain level-headed and not get carried away by early success. Unmukt Chand seems to have succeeded in doing this (Chand grounded on landing,IE,August 29). The Under-19 brigade cannot assume that a world cup win naturally means a smooth transition to the senior side. Many young cricketers will be swept up in IPL fever. However, they should remain focused and set their mind on higher targets.
