Javed Anand’s ‘Shifting Saudi sands’ (IE,January 6) ends with: “The photograph shows a pilgrim couple perched on a stone on the holy Mount Arafat, absorbed in reading the Quran. It is the woman who holds the book, reading to the man. And her face is unveiled. Al-Jazirah’s caption applauds her role as the religious mediator. “ Khadija, the Prophet’s first wife, was older than him. She was a successful, independent woman. She was the first Muslim. She proposed marriage to him. When her husband was persecuted she stood by him and helped him. Islam in Saudi Arabia appears to be returning to its roots, albeit slowly.

The T-word

Apropos ‘Telangana report is in ,jury still out’ (IE,January 6),indeed,it’s a delicate issue. As mentioned by the Srikrishna Committee, the best option is to let Andhra Pradesh remain united, but whether that will be the case is a big question, considering the Congress’s troubles post Jaganmohan Reddy’s exit. There is Hyderabad, which is the centre of this matter, and both pro- and anti-Telangana supporters want it. New states have to have resources at their disposal to grow.

Naveen Jindal’s suggestion to accept Indian rupees from foreigners while shopping in duty free shops in Indian airports is worth considering (‘INR and out’,IE,January 7). Asking them to convert rupees again into foreign currency is illogical and avoidable. We may have globalised our economy but our internal rules remain straitjacketed, insular and obsolete. The new symbol of the Indian rupee, which represents its growing economic status in the world, will gain international recognition only if we start accepting its monetary strength and importance.

Small & big

It was a welcome change to see a frontpage headline about Bollywood ( ‘Udaan takes off,Salman sweep at Screen,’ IE,January 7). It is a deserved recognition of one of the greatest industries of India. The Star Screen awards have lauded small films. Real merit seems to be the criteria in the Screen Awards and the proof the award for best actor (female) going to Vidya Balan. Films play a major role in the daily lives of people, ordinary people in particular. Screen should also initiate special TV awards separately, for the small screen which is beginning to play a major role in people’s lives along with the big screen.

Chanakya Niti

I refer to the news,‘2G revolt in Tamil Nadu: Alagiri threatens to resign unless Kanimozhi,Raja dumped,’ (IE,January 6). Though some may be happy with this development,I have a feeling this may be a Chanakya-like move by M. Karunanidhi to divide votes, especially in the Madurai region.
