• What an individual does is invariably tied to the environment that has nurtured him or her. Our actions are a function of how we connect to the world. Kasabs mother may throw light on how and when things went wrong and her son was transformed into a terrorist, although one cannot be too sure about it. Capitalising on deprivation and despair, apocalyptic and fanatical cults turn ordinary human beings into almost monolithic killing machines. Other families in the fundamentalist zone should realise this and learn from the Kasab case.

Not helping itself
• The BJP seems to have fallen behind the Congress as far their respective national credentials go,and nothing short of a miracle may allow the party to form the next government at the Centre. Besides,Manmohan Singh appears to be favoured over the other PM aspirants by the public. However,it may still be difficult for the Congress to form the next government without Left support, and Dr Singh is not likely to be acceptable to the Left as PM. But the BJP itself has consistently failed to utilise any of the weaknesses of and difficulties faced by the Congress for some time.

Close watch
• There are high expectations from the Election Commission, given its crackdown on whatever it deems suspicious electoral tactics. Sudden twists and turns in party agendas and politics are unpredictable, but these confuse the electorate nevertheless. Above all, these keep voters from focussing on governmental stability and issues of concern. For the sake of good governance, the EC should keep a close watch on what prospective representatives of the people say and do.

Tough job
• The EC is occupied with the challenging task of holding free and fair elections amidst a flood of complaints and counter-complaints concerning the model code of conduct. But its very difficult to conduct elections on such scale. However, since the EC doesnt enjoy any power in the real sense,it would be unfair to suggest that it maintain perspective and to blame it for exceeding its grasp or undermining its own power.

Wise move
• Barack Obamas decision to relax travel restrictions on Cuban-Americans is pragmatic. A US,which sold globalisation and trade liberalisation to the world, shouldnt have continued with the embargo against Cuba. Obamas departure from the hardline Bush administrations alienating policies is therefore welcome. After all,its not just Cuba but the US as well that stands to benefit from this attempt at change.
