Drivers first
Cases like the CWG allegations and the 2G spectrum scam occur when corporates go to their extremes and politicians forget theirs (‘Thank God for politics’,IE,February 19). So,apprehending corporates seems more unjustified than not apprehending politicians for ignorance of theirs, especially when the reins are always with the politician. The effective chief ministers such as Nitish Kumar,Narendra Modi and others have learnt how to use the reins for bureaucrats and corporates. So punishing the politician is more important than admonishing corporates as the chariot’s direction is determined by the charioteer.

I was a little surprised by Shekhar Gupta’s ‘Thank God for politics’. No right-minded Indian will have any quarrel with politics per se. But it’s the politician who gets everyone’s goat around here. And defending our politicos by comparing them with those in Pakistan is an insult even to them. Pakistanis may have thrown Musharraf out,but where are they when fundamentalists are gunning down one politician after another? The appointment of Prithviraj Chavan as chief minister of Maharashtra is no great shakes. The Congress,in fact, has to hang its head in shame for the events leading up to that appointment.

Batting against
Shekhar Gupta’s comparison of Manmohan Singh with Rahul Dravid makes sense, considering that Dravid has been his team’s saviour many times. We expect Dr Singh to also put the country on the path of transparency, along with economic growth. How successful he will be is yet to be seen, although he has the intent and grit to overcome the odds. At the same time,he shouldn’t forget that his own party members are allegedly involved in scams like CWG and Adarsh. Hence,he cannot put attribute everything to coalition politics.

People against Maoists
Apropos the editorial ‘Orissa’s writ’ (IE,February 19),the abduction of the young district collector of Malkangiri by Maoists is a slap on the face of the intellectual brigade of Maoist sympathisers, which projects them as messiahs of the poor. It may seem being cruel to the abducted officials while suggesting the state government shouldn’t make the mistake of offering an olive branch to Maoists, but the fact remains that surrendering to blackmailing tactics creates more complicated problems. With public anger growing against them,Maoists are bound to lose the war.

Other criteria
The editorial ‘Time to skill’ (IE,February 18) rightly makes a case for equal opportunities. But why make it caste-based? For the much-needed uplift of the underprivileged sections of society, the government can always make extra arrangements; however, the basis for providing such help should not be caste but financial status and merit.
