Oppositions within

* It is not a surprise that Sushma Swaraj’s graceful acceptance of the prime minister’s owning responsibility for P.J. Thomas’s appointment as CVC has set off a storm in the BJP’s top leadership (‘Different strokes’,IE,March 11). Instead of speaking in one voice on sensitive issues,BJP leaders queer the pitch for others for their selfish motives, thus losing the opportunity of projecting the party as a mature opposition.

* The aam aadmi was impressed when Manmohan Singh took responsibility for the CVC’s appointment. Sushma Swaraj graciously acknowledged the gesture even though her party resented it. However,it took every one by surprise when Prithviraj Chavan was blamed for not alerting the PM about the case against P.J. Thomas. Here lies the rub: the PM may not have been aware of the case pending against Thomas, but surely he was made aware when Swaraj voiced her dissent? At this juncture, could the matter not have been postponed for further verification?

Paid to judge

* Every time a corruption case involving a judge is unravelled,it’s casually dismissed by the judicial fraternity and the political class as a minor aberration (‘Judge fast-tracked case, was paid after her ruling’,IE,March 9). Judges are put on the highest pedestal of morality and their unimpeachable integrity is the bedrock of the justice system. The Justice Nirmal Yadav case brings to light the fact that there’s a likely nexus between some unscrupulous judges, advocates and their associates.

Waiting & watching

* A lot of time has been lost in which a credible and courageous international response could have been formed about the situation in Libya. While France was the first major power to recognise the opposition as Libya’s legitimate government, others too should have had the moral and diplomatic strength to send a firm signal to Gaddafi even as he consolidates the onslaught on rebel positions. Short of military action and more than a no-fly zone,Gaddafi has to be stopped before Libya witnesses a large-scale massacre of its citizens. It seems, the time for mere words is fast running out.

Fearing difference?

* This refers to the story ‘North-East men too find Capital unsafe’ (IE,March 8). The research mentioned reveals that 78 per cent migrants from the Northeast in Delhi face racial discrimination. This happens because of their looks and culture. But looks and culture differ across our country. And each people has its unique identity. Discrimination goes against the spirit of the ethnic and cultural diversity of India. This makes them insecure and they keep away from the rest of society, sticking tot heir own groups.
