• This refers to C. Raja Mohan’s idealistic article ‘Towards a grand summit’. His suggestion of a trilateral summit involving India,Afghanistan (Pashtuns) and Pakistan can be admired for its objectivity. But in view of Pakistan’s track record and the multiplicity of power centres prevailing there,it is only wishful thinking. Even if India walks two steps for peace,it’s highly unlikely that Pakistan would move one step up,since a fragile situation within Pakistan serves Zardari’s purpose. In the name of fighting the Taliban,Pakistan has continued milking the US financially and militarily. The need of the hour is to tame Pakistan through earnest diplomacy. It’s a long way to go till Pakistan,on its own, proves its peace credentials.

Cricket diplomacy

• It’s not clear why Lalit Modi should be blamed when none of the IPL franchisees was keen on picking Pakistani cricketers. This is something for Pakistan to ponder. It’s absurd to believe that the India-Pakistan relationship would improve if only the two nations played cricket.

• The editorial ‘Due diligence’,on the Padma Bhushan for Sant Singh Chatwal, touches on the very process of selection of awardees. First,Chatwal is a non-resident Indian; secondly, one doesn’t know precisely how he has served Indian interests. He’s always at the right place at the right time, wherever US political heavyweights are. If the Padma award for this controversial figure raises eyebrows,it is not surprising.

• The RSS chief’s denunciation of the Shiv Sena and the MNS politics is deceptively nationalistic in tenor. The timing couldn’t have been better. The original Sena stands irrevocably split. The Congress has compromised its pan-Indian image for having proposed that Mumbai taxi drivers learn Marathi. The resultant vacuum can be readily filled by the BJP,given its posture now on Mumbai. In Maharashtra, with mounting food prices,Congress-NCP ties are bound to fray. The BJP,with its refurbished leadership, may be expected to wrest some vital initiatives from the Congress across many states.

Icon Federer

• It is remarkable that Roger Federer has won the Australian Open, his 16th major title, and his first Grand Slam as a father. The best thing about players like Federer is that they never give up or take their heart out of the game. A Federer can lose a match, but can’t be defeated. Indian sportspersons need to learn from the likes of Federer.
