No-fly zone

India’s decision to abstain from the UNSC resolution on the Libyan intervention is a result of pragmatic reasoning. Still,by not making a forceful articulation of moral support to the democratic forces,India has stopped itself from crossing the threshold to the stage of international politics. France and Britain have espoused a moral obligation to aid the cause of a democratic struggle and have even led the US into this intervention. While India will never have a say in the strategy or the outcome of the deployment in Libya,we must make it clear that we support those fighting for their freedom.

Hats off to Yuvraj Singh who took India into the semi-finals of the cricket World Cup with his batting and bowling (‘Yuvraj pulls off coup’,IE,March 25). After a good start from Virendra Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, superbly supported by Gautam Gambhir, the men-in-blue were on a solid platform. It was Yuvraj who stole the show with his powerful batting and equally splendid bowling spell against the Australians. Suresh Raina too is becoming a trustworthy batsman with each

passing innings. In a sense, the quarter-final clash between India and Australia was a sort

of “final”.

Now Team India need to keep their tempo and morale high as they take on traditional rivals Pakistan in the semi-final in Mohali. This will be a match to watch as both sides will fight tooth and nail to earn a berth in the final. If India perform the way they did against the Aussies, they might even win the Cup.

The Aussies ran into their nemeses again. The entire cricketing world was looking to India to halt the Australian juggernaut on its way to another World Cup championship. India did not disappoint. The Indian team displayed an extraordinary composure to chase the target with no sign of a rush of blood or madness.

The Aussies were made to bite the dust in one of the most hard-fought encounters of the edition. Their mindgame doesn’t trouble any more leading opponents like India and Sri Lanka, who respond with befitting aggression and skill. By defeating the Aussies,India have made the rest of the battle easy for the other teams as well, and this World Cup will see a refreshingly new winner.

Wrong timing

Making pre-poll promises of all-inclusive development and multifarious betterment of life by political parties is quite in order (‘Promises, promises’,IE,March 25). But selective promises made to sections of voters by the DMK and the AIADMK — just before the assembly polls — about freebies is open bribery of voters. Such promises are solely aimed at winning over certain votebanks and need to be declared unfair electoral practice.
