None for all

This is regarding Shekhar Gupta’s narrative of the Manmohan Singh government’s acts of ignominy in which it “blundered from one indefensible position to another” (‘One Raja in jail, all of UPA in handcuffs’,IE,February 5). Besides the 2G scandal that led to the Supreme Court’s verdict cancelling 122 licences,Gupta rightly cites the controversy over the army chief’s year of birth and the Antrix-Devas deal where the government showed an “utterly arbitrary” and “self-serving” attitude. All in all,it is a profile of a pathetic mess caused by a weak, leaderless regime afflicted by internal bickering and an “every-man-for-himself mindset”.

The editorial ‘Stand on Syria’ (IE,February 6) has well advised India to come down on one side or another of the fence instead of sitting on it nonchalantly in the international arena. After walking on eggshells for some time, finally India has voted for the UNSC resolution on Syria. China and Russia are opposing the moves of Western countries and the Arab League for a resolution to the political turmoil in the country for their own regional interests, not ours. If India aspires to be a world power,it needs to be a trailblazer, not a camp follower. It must remove its blinkers to imagine itself a bigger role in international affairs.

Let them grow

THIS refers to ‘Auctions, options’ (IE,February 6). The Supreme Court has asked Trai to factor in the auction route in the next licensing, which at the outset looks fine but when we dig deeper,we realise that the auction may not be the best deal for the end user. The telecom company who wins the auction as the highest bidder would try to recover its cost as early as possible – and it will be the consumer who will suffer. In the last 16-17 years,if the telecom sector has boomed,it is essentially because the services offered by telecom companies were very competitive in pricing. And the government must find ways to allow this sector

to flourish.

First come first served policy was all right in 2001 when the spectrum market was at a nascent stage, but not in 2008. And this is something the UPA government and its advocate Kapil Sibal should understand. The core issue in the entire 2G debate is: why did the telecom minister of the UPA decide to follow a redundant policy of the NDA for ulterior motives?
