The editorial My vote,my pay (IE,August 18) says that a pay increase for MPs is overdue. Its on record that about 300 of our MPs are crorepatis. They get allowances and free/ subsided facilities worth many times their pay. In this country,a big percentage of bread-winners get about Rs 20 a day. Much of the population doesnt get two square meals a day. Why should these crorepati servants of the people,as they pretend to be,even get any pay,let alone a hike from Rs 16,000 to Rs 50,000?

Perform for pay After the huge hue and cry in Lok Sabha over the Union cabinet not clearing the MPs pay hike bill,a suggestion evolved. It is to establish a system of performance-linked pay for MPs. There should be a review committee on MPs performance both in their respective constituencies and in Parliament. According to their merits,as declared by the review committee, salaries and allowances should be fixed and increased from time to time. There should also be a provision for pay cuts if they dont perform well. By deploying this scheme,we may get basic works done in our local areas. Also, there will be performance pressure on not only MPs but also ministers. By this,we can develop professionalism in the legislature. This may even help other nations improve their own parliamentary systems. Hrushikesh Dave Patan Unnerving silence This refers to Shekhar Guptas Is anybody there? (IE,August 14). Complacent sums up the national sentiment about the government today. Its surprising that a party renowned for a strong central leadership is suddenly functioning like an under-trained school football team,in which every team member thinks he can prove a point by scoring goals. Manmohan Singhs silence on crucial national issues is rather absurd. Also, the rather muted version of Sonia Gandhi in UPA-II,much stabler than UPA-I,is appalling. The saddest part of the internal bickering is that the strong mandate given to UPA-II,in this age of coalitions,is being utilised as a cushion to relax. It would be appreciated if the government came up with clear policies regarding interaction with the public. Dinesh Gopalakrishnan Safe polls The Walk the Talk (IE,August 17)with CEC S.Y. Quraishi will assure young voters in Bihar regarding their doubts. The electoral process is now on such a track that it cant be derailed. In the last few elections, people have also become more positive. But some problems still exist, such as insecurity and the role of big money. In fact, the safety issue concerns electoral workers more. Also, many FIRs filed during polls tend to have no further significance. However, such an interaction with the CEC will satisfy voters. Nikhil Jha Madhubani
