Roots of violence
The violence in Assam,a place where I lived for 25 years,is a cause for worry. It is the outcome of a dogged refusal by successive Union and state governments to defuse the tension between migrants and indigenous residents of the region. The editorial Kokrajhar,unheard (IE,July 26) cautiously and variously talks about migrant Muslims,minorities and immigrant Muslims. It is easy for you and me,safe in our cities,to preach peace and restraint to the Bodos,but we do not have to compete with a growing population of immigrants for already sparse resources. The Congress and its allies have always denied the presence of Bangladeshis in Assam,while the BJP makes some noise but does little about the issue. Until the nation acknowledges the root of this crisis,people will continue to suffer in Assam.

THIS refers to the shocking revelation that IAS officers are working in foreign countries under a different name (The missing babus,IE,July 26). They should be asked to pay a huge penalty so that others learn a lesson or two. And it must be investigated why no action has been taken against these officers who have not joined work long after their leave was over.

This may be an opportune moment to address corruption,administrative malpractice and irregularities in Indias sports bodies.
