Top gear
* This refers to Shekhar Guptas The Summer Freeze (IE,June 18). The comparison between a cricket Test match and the current political scene in India is apt. I would like to add that,as in cricket, every day is a new day and past performance doesnt guarantee the present outcome. Its the same in politics. The UPA and Manmohan Singh cannot sit on their laurels of the nuclear deal episode. For,in its second avatar, the UPA has faced several challenges which are never-ending. Sadly, both the Congress and the UPA seem to be driving in second gear, while top gear is the need of the hour.

Shouting match
* Shekhar Guptas The Summer Freeze was hard-hitting. He has rightly expressed his amazement at the deafening silence from the top three leaders of the establishment on all crucial issues and the parading of front men to face the people. When precisely this very issue is raised on the cacophonous TV debates by the representatives of the BJP,the principal opposition, the likes of Jayanthi Natarajan and Manish Tewari either shout them down or contemptuously dismiss them altogether.

What about NAC?
* Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit hit the bulls eye by attacking the idea of creating institutions that are unaccountable (Sheila first CM to say we dont need a Lokpal,IE,June 18). She would have received acclaim had she objected when the National Advisory Council was constituted. Whats the need for the NAC when theres a big council of ministers aided by the Planning Commission? Dikshit should tell the public to whom the NAC is accountable. Its nothing but a parallel cabinet without accountability and liability. Ever since politics became a profession instead of a tool to serve the public, the quality of governance has nosedived.

Money from nothing
* The report of the recovery of Rs 12 crore,98 kg of gold and 307 kg of silver from the personal chamber of the late Sathya Sai Baba is shocking. What was this wealth doing in the godmans personal chamber? Arent godmen supposed to declare their income like others? Is it enough to say that the wealth recovered in this case will be deposited in the State Bank of India? A full-fledged inquiry needs to be conducted. The wealth recovered must go to the national exchequer. Im sure several grain silos can be constructed with this wealth to save foodgrains from rotting.

Wimbledon at 125
* The 125th edition of the most prestigious of the four Grand Slams is about to begin on June 20. Expectations are running high for the Indian prospect in the ladies singles Sania Mirza. Its hoped, this time round,Mirza would be able to break the jinx of invariably failing to go beyond the second round.
