•We Indians must feel proud for not only the successful general election,but also this vote for stability. While the Election Commission is credited with the polling process,the electorate must be congratulated for the maturity it has shown in opting for serious players and confining the spoilers to the fringes. But the biggest stories,apart from the Congress resurgence in UP,are voters distinction in Bihar between populist Lalu Prasad and constructive Nitish Kumar and the beginning of the end for the Left Front in Bengal,and thereby at the Centre.

•Manmohan Singhs second term as prime minister is an opportune moment to utilise the vision,principles and intellectual acumen the PM possesses. That Manmohan Singh is a person of absolute personal integrity and public accountability is beyond doubt. His vision encompasses Indias domestic problems as well as its global role. As he begins anew,Dr Singh must first make an elaborate mission statement to indicate the direction in which he intends to take the country and ask the public to participate in realising the dream. The PMs vision translated into governmental agenda is the road India must take.

Discouraging record
•The suggestion that focus on strategic areas like education,police,judiciary and development will help India meet its growth expectations and bring welfare for all is correct (Three more reforms¿,IE,May 20). However,it would be worth keeping in mind that,for this government,its policy of reservations in recruitment and promotion in sectors like judiciary,higher education,police and healthcare had in effect throttled the functioning of these departments,contributing to their steep decline in performance and efficiency.

•The editorial 356 reasons (IE,May 22) has correctly advised against the use of Central coalition politics to settle local scores. Mamata Banerjee must not urge,let alone force,the Union government to undemocratically dismiss the West Bengal government. Such impulsive or irrational highhandedness is bound to boomerang on the UPA at the Centre. If Banerjee is serious about bringing an end to the Lefts entrenched rule in Bengal,she should wait for her chance in the 2011 assembly polls. Meanwhile,Banerjee and the Trinamool should concentrate on their ministerial responsibilities at the Centre. Good performance in Delhi would add immensely to the partys stature in Bengal.

Friends like foes
•The UPA loses its first wicket without a run on the board as the DMK refuses to end its politics of blackmail,almost exactly like it had done in 2004,albeit from a stronger position since the Congress was nowhere as strong as it is now. Politicians like Karunanidhi should be clearly told that the Union cabinet is not a feudal fiefdom for his extended family. The Congress should also watch out for the Trinamools tantrums.
