Unparalleled

I recalled an incident after reading ‘Life lessons from Jagjivan Ram’ (IE,April 9). As a staff officer to former army chief Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw,I once accompanied him to the office of defence minister Jagjivan Ram in the 1970s. He handed over a note to Manekshaw, saying: “Sam,please attend to this case.” I handled the case. The wife of a unit cobbler had complained to the minister that her husband had not written to her for ages from his place of posting. I was tasked to check with the cobbler’s unit and ensure his wife got a response from him in record time. Such a politician does not exist today.

Apropos ‘Talk to each other’ (IE,April 10),the recent developments seem to have been a blessing in disguise, since these have led to the parliamentary standing committee scheduling a meeting with the three service chiefs. The panel should now try to sincerely and objectively understand and address the concerns of the armed forces about India’s defence preparedness.

THE news that the service chiefs will get to depose before a parliamentary committee on defence makes a believer of an atheist like me. Good times for the Indian armed forces seem to have arrived, purely by providence. Thank you,General VK. You’ve achieved the impossible.

REGARDING ‘PIL: Communal card at highest level in Army’ (IE,April 10),if promising officers are denied their due opportunity for promotion to accommodate a chosen few,it is unfortunate. The army should be helped to remain in the highest form of professional efficiency and operational preparedness at all times.

IN ‘Get moving on NCTC’ (IE,April 10),the writer has made a strong case for the NCTC. The existing police apparatus cannot protect states from terrorist attacks,as was evident during 26/11. An umbrella structure will minimise the gap between attack and response.
