Wrong choices
* Ever since Anna Hazares movement started, many a naysayer has been harping on the ineligibility of civil society to dictate terms for the Lokpal bill. But an important question remains: what have our elected representatives done for us? They have been strengthening the power base for themselves and their successors. Scam after scam has been uncovered but very rarely has the culprit been punished. If this is how our elected representatives want to run the country, then we should do something about it. We also require election reforms so that people with a criminal background will not be able to contest elections. We need people who are not the beneficiaries of weak laws to draft our anti-corruption legislation. Only honest people from the civil society can help.

U-turn
* The editorial Enoughs enough (IE,April 16) has rightly exposed the Congress, which has suddenly changed its position on the PAC inquiry into the 2G spectrum scam. Initially, the party was in favour of an investigation by the PAC,when the opposition was clamouring for a JPC probe. Now,they are saying the PAC investigation will be redundant,as the JPC will be covering the same ground. Had they agreed to a JPC from the beginning, this logic wouldve carried some weight.
Tarsem Singh,New Delhi
* Since the PAC is a parliamentary body meant to keep a tab on the executive, the Congresss campaign against it seems to be just an attempt to thwart its smooth functioning and defeat the purpose of the much-needed probe into the 2G scam. While the clash of jurisdictions is unwarranted, people have the right to know the truth and are interested in seeing the guilty punished.

Tame the bug
* In Refusing the bitter pill (IE,April 16),the writer has aptly pointed out the need to check over-prescription of drugs by doctors and sale of antibiotics without prescription by pharmacies. The government should stop questioning the Lancet study that confirms the presence of a superbug in India. Instead,it should think of ways to containing the grave threat posed by the superbug. Strict laws are needed. Otherwise, even curing an ordinary infection may become difficult.

Jail time
* Justice C.K. Prasads observation Can we call a person Gandhian just because a copy of the Mahatmas autobiography was found at his home? while granting bail to Dr Binayak Sen says it all. There should be some provision for giving reasonable compensation for people who are wrongly jailed. This will impose an effective check on the system for resisting bail applications as was in the case of Sen.
