Opinion Even Madhuri was there! Where are you Aamir?
Shah Rukh Khan held her tight and we beheld the couple with a sigh.
What did you do last Sunday? If you had any sense, you would have been glued to Madhuri Dikshit. As lasting attachments go,it’s a good choice. There she was,the ‘diva’ of all smiles with the most delectable set of teeth, you almost wish she’d bite you. Well… it was that kind of moment: She was swaying to the music, her body hitting all the right notes and then just before she fell,a pair of male arms gladly received her.
Shah Rukh Khan held her tight and we beheld the couple with a sigh. Why stay up till 11pm if it is not to watch Shah Rukh romance Madhuri? Who knows when the two film stars shall meet again for such a performance? Now,were you an optimist you’d reply, next year at the same awards ceremony but that is unkind: while you will most certainly see SRK making a one-man spectacle of himself at a films awards show next year as the host,as a performer,as a winner (or perhaps all three!),Madhuri Dikshit is unlikely to give us a repeat performance in a hurry.
Yes,it was worth staying up for yet another Bollywood bash. The new year always begins with this deluge of film award presentations with Star Screen Awards leading the way. Not quite sure why. Is it because we want to teach the Oscars a trick or two before its telecast on February 27? Is it because,an ‘anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better?’ syndrome prevails? That the minute one film publication holds the event, all the others must do likewise, otherwise they will feel left out?
Dunno the reason but it is odd. And a delightful timepass on a Sunday evening (always Sunday evenings). There are jokes by the hosts at everyone’s expense there are gracious speeches like the one Manna Dey made at the Filmfare Awards there are exotic locations (Singapore for the Zee Cine Awards) and then there is ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’,playing to a packed house each time witness Katrina Kaif at the Star Screen Awards (feeling hot, hot, hot). Performances have become the highlight of the shows and although some are very entertaining, you’d have thought the awards would get top billing?
But much more than this,it is the shots of the audience you really wait for. There are no surprises here, but then you are not looking to be surprised on a Sunday evening with Monday looming before you. You want the superstars gathered around you to keep the blues at bay. So you’ll see Amitabh Bachchan without Jayaji and feel thrilled that he has Aishwarya by his side, looking down her nose at everything.
The camera will be magnetically attracted to Kajol’s smile, perhaps the most sought after at these award ceremonies because there are so few people who smile. It’s gotten better but there was a time when an award would be announced, the camera would pan to the audience and everyone would be either glum or expressionless. Now,realising that the nation is watching them, they attempt a smile that sometimes ends up like a grimace that would be Ranee M watching Vidya B (just joking).
You’ll see endless shots of Shah Rukh from every angle, and of Karan Johar and Rekha. She’s an awards fav. All year round, you see and hear nothing of her but come the film awards and she’s at each one, resplendent and luxurious. We see plenty of Hritik Roshan and Rishi,Kapoor, too, followed by all the new young things not all of whom you recognise unless you are a dedicated follower of film– is that Sonakshi or Anushka?
After this,it all depends on who is sitting in the front row and who has been nominated. They all look gorgeous and you wish you were equally gorgeous or seated next to them so that some of it may rub off on you!
You admire what they wear, you analyse their expressions, you notice who is seated next to whom and in vain look out for Aamir Khan.
Maybe one Sunday,he’ll relent and come onboard. Until then,we’ll settle for SRK.
