Apple's Lion tries to make Mac app-centric like the iPhone and iPad,with access to Mac App Store and Launchpad.
Apple is at it again. Wednesday saw a slew of announcements from Cupertino,the most significant being the release of the Mac OS X Lion,the latest operating system from Apple. The new operating system tries to make the Mac app-centric like the iPhone and iPad with access to Mac App Store and Launchpad. The Lion will also include new Multi-Touch gestures; Mission Control,an innovative view of everything running on your Mac; and a completely redesigned mail app.
Plus,there will be Resume,which conveniently brings your apps back exactly how you left them when you restart your Mac or quit and relaunch an app. Apple has also incorporated Auto Save,which automatically and continuously saves your documents as you work,along with Versions,that records the history of your document as you create it. Meanwhile,AirDrop will sets up a peer-to-peer wireless connection to make transferring files quick and easy between Macs.
Lion is now available for download from the Mac App Store for $29.99,also as an upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.6.6 Snow Leopard. Interestingly,the upgrade file is just around 4GB and users who do not have broadband access can download Lion at any Apple retail stores.
Another interesting announcement was the updated MacBook Air with next Intel Core i5 and Core i7 dual-core processors,high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology,a backlit keyboard and Mac OS X Lion. Despite the augmented performance and new flash storage,the MacBook Air is now available from Rs 56,900 onwards,about half its cost last year. MacBook Air also features Intel HD Graphics 3000 and offers up to 4GB of faster 1333 MHz memory.
Apple says its new Thunderbolt I/O technology provides expansion possibilities never before available to MacBook Air users. Through a single cable,users can connect to high performance peripherals and the new Apple Thunderbolt Display (Rs 56,900).
The 1.6 GHz 11-inch MacBook Air is available in two models,one with 2GB of memory and 64GB of flash storage for Rs. 56,900 and one with 4GB of memory and 128GB of flash storage for Rs 67,900. The 1.7 GHz 13-inch MacBook Air comes in two configurations,one with 4GB of memory and 128GB of flash storage for Rs 73,900 and one with 4GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage for Rs 89,900.
Naturally,Apple has also updated the Mac Mini with the next generation Intel core processors,new discrete graphics,Thunderbolt I/O and Lion and will now be available at prices starting Rs 44,900.
