BJP trounces Congress in Guj panchayat,municipalities polls

After defeating Congress in the municipal corporation polls,the BJP trounced the opposition party in the panchayats and municipalities elections.

After defeating Congress in the municipal corporation polls,the BJP trounced the opposition party in the panchayats and municipalities elections.

The counting for elections of 24 district panchayats,208 taluka panchayats and 53 municipalities held on Thursday,was held today.

Out of the 24 district panchayats the BJP won clear majority in 21 with Congress got majority in Gandhinagar and Tapi. The district panchyats of Bharuch got a hung verdict.

Out of the 208 taluka panchayats,results of 157 were declared,in which BJP has own 122,Congress 20 and Janta Dal(U) two,while in the three taluka panchayats the verdict was hung.

In the 53 municipalities elections,the BJP has won 42 seats while the Congress and others got four seats respectively. In Porbandar both the BJP and Congress won 21 seats each out of the total 42 seats.

State Congress president Siddarth Patel resigned after the polls results,taking moral responsibility o the defeat.

He has sent his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi,party sources said.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi addressing a rally after his party’s victory said the polls results indicate that BJP has been supported by poor people,Muslims and tribals.
