Digvijaya son-in-law’s name a ‘mistake’, removed from list

The protest had started immediately after his candidature was announced along with seven others for Gujarat Tuesday.

The Congress central election committee has dropped the name of Paranjadityasinh Parmar, the son-in-law of AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh, as the Panchmahals candidate following a protest from local MLAs.

State Congress president Arjun Modhwadia confirmed the cancellation saying, “His name had crept into the list of candidates by mistake.” The cancellation of the candidature, however, follows protests from workers who considered him an “outsider”.

The protest had started immediately after his candidature was announced along with seven others for Gujarat Tuesday. Among those who had strongly opposed his candidature are Balasinor MLA Mansinh Chauhan and Thasra MLA Ramsinh Parmar.

Mansinh and Ramsinh were also aspirants for the LS ticket from the seat. Their names were in the panel of possible candidates suggested by the party state unit, along with the name of Paranjadityasinh.

Sources said Paranjadityasinh’s name was cancelled following verbal threats from the two sitting MLAs to resign and rebellion by a section of the Panchmahals district party unit.
