One day after the BJP scored a zero in the three assembly segment by-elections in three different states of the Northeastern region, veteran Congress leader and Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said the BJP wave that swept Maharashtra and Haryana did not touch the region.

Instead, Gogoi said the results of the three by-elections – one each in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur – was clear indication that the people of the Northeast had realized that whatever promise prime minister Narendra Modi had made for the region were nothing but just lip sympathy.

“Victory of Congress in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur and regional party in Nagaland by- elections proved that BJP wave did not touch the Northeast. It is clear indication that people of Northeast realized that Modi’s promise of special treatment to NE is just lip sympathy,” Gogoi, in a tweet posted today said.

By-elections were held for one assembly constituency each in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. While the Naga People’s Front (NPF) retained the Northern Angami-II in Nagaland, the Congress retained the Hiyanglam (Manipur) and Kanubari (Arunachal Pradesh) assembly seats with clear margins.
