Parents refuse to cremate body as Jats step up stir

Jats have been demanding OBC quota in government jobs and educational institutions.

AS THE body of a 20-year-old killed in police firing lay on the rail tracks at Hisar today, its protesters were confident the Jat agitation had got a new lease of life.

His parents sat next to Sandeep’s body, saying they wouldn’t cremate him till their demands were met. “Today, one child has died. If we need to sacrifice even 10,we will not move back now,” said his father Jogi Ram. “Sandeep died because he fought for the rights of the entire Jat community. He was not studying anywhere, nor did he want any government job. But he was fighting for the cause of his brothers and sisters.”

The Jats have been protesting for three weeks now demanding OBC quota in government jobs and educational institutions.

Sandeep is survived by his father, mother Bimla Devi and younger brother Krishan. He had left home in Mayyar village yesterday to “take the place” of his father Jogi Ram at the protest site on the rail track. As police tried to get the tracks vacated, the protesters held them off for three hours. Finally, the police opened fire, injuring many and leaving Sandeep dead.

“Sandeep was a brave boy and was always ready to help people fighting for their rights,” said Chand Ram,a fellow villager at Mayyar.

“His killers will never get peace. They will bear the same pain as me. The police and this chief minister have snatched my son. God will never pardon them,” said Bimla Devi.

Sandeep’s is the second death in the course of the Jat agitation in Haryana. Earlier,in September 2010,a youth of Ladwa, also in Hisar, had died in police firing. Then Hisar superintendent of police was booked on charges of murder.
