The Election Commission of India Wednesday conveyed displeasure over Assam’s Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmah’s inflammatory remarks in Tezpur during an election meeting. Sarmah during a rally in Panch Mile in Tezpur on March 29 had said “blood of Muslims flows through” water pipes in Gujarat and exhorted people to “pray during namaz” that a particular candidate wins from Tezpur so that “this type of killer could never be the PM of India”.
Following a complaint, Sarmah was issued a notice on April 18 to which he replied on April 21.
Stating that it was convinced that Sarmah has made “communal and inflammatory statements which have the impact of aggravating differences or creating mutual hatred between communities”, the EC also warned Sarmah to be “more careful in future”.
