RPI says street-dwellers should not be deprived of voting

"Dr B R Ambedkar had formulated one man-one vote-one value principal," he said.

Republican Party of India (RPI) president Ramdas Athawale today said that the demand made by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray to cancel the names of street-dwellers from electoral rolls was against the constitutional framework.

“Raj Thackeray’s demand challenges the Indian constitution. If a person is poor and he is deprived of voting would amount to breaching the constitutional framework,” Athawale told reporters.

Raj Thackeray had met the state Election Commission Chief yesterday to demand cancellation of names of those who live on streets from the electoral rolls arguing that registering these people as voters would increase bogus voting during elections.

“Dr B R Ambedkar had formulated one man-one vote-one value principal. We oppose strongly Raj Thackeray’s demand,” Athawale said.

He said a delegation led by him would meet the State’s Chief Election Commissioner soon adding “We will put forward our demand saying that the poor should also get the right to exercise his franchise”.
