SC gives Chishty bail,cites ‘good Indo-Pak tidings’

Court found no reason for the continued incarceration of Chishty considering his age.

The Supreme Court Monday granted bail to Khalil Chishty,an 80-year-old Karachi resident serving life term for murder in an Indian jail,even as it welcomed the “good tidings” over Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to India yesterday.

“We hope what happened yesterday will continue in the future,” the court said,assuring that it would take a sympathetic view in case Chishty desires to return to Pakistan.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik,who accompanied Zardari,had enquired about Chishty.

The court found no reason for the continued incarceration of Chishty considering his age and health. Chishty’s advocate said the accomplished virologist had suffered a prolonged trial for 18 years in a foreign country and been convicted for life.

While directing the Ajmer Fast Track Court to release Chishty on bail,the court rejected a request from him to move base to Delhi following objection by Rajasthan. For now he has to stay in Ajmer.
