Trinamool candidate jailed for a day

Roy was absconding after the EC ordered his arrest for assaulting its officials.

Union Minister Mukul Roy’s son and Trinamool Congress candidate Subhranshu Roy was on Monday remanded in jail custody for a day after a local court rejected his bail prayer.

Roy,who is contesting from Bijpur Assembly constituency,was produced in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate,Barrackpore,Rajarshi Basu Adhikary.

The magistrate directed the police to submit the case diary before the court tomorrow and remanded him in jail custody for a day.

Roy had been absconding after the Election Commission ordered his arrest for assaulting EC officials and was arrested on Sunday after a rally by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee at Naihati.

The Commission had on Tuesday filed an FIR at the Bijpur police station against Roy and 10 others for assaulting members of an EC team which had gone to erase wall writings on public and private buildings.

The EC had later suspended inspector in-charge Partha Pratim Roy for failing to arrest the offender.

The CPI(M) had demanded Roy’s arrest for disrespecting

the Election Commission.
