Top results from Round 2 of 45th Chess Olympiad

China lost its first individual points but managed to defeat Chile in the second round. World Champion Ding Liren drew on the first board against Cristobal Henriquez Villagra.

Uzbekistan also conceded half a point to Egypt when Hamed Wafa (2368) managed to draw against Javokhir Sindarov (2677). The Netherlands narrowly won against Belgium with two draws on the lower boards, but were never at risk of losing the match, winning 2.5-1.5.

The top seeded Team USA have won both their matches, but the team is yet to hit top form. Playing for the first time at the Budapest Olympiad, Fabiano Caruana won his game against Singapore in Round 2. But Caruana did not seem entirely convinced by the nature of their win. “At the moment, Levon (Aronian) is struggling. His game today is very dangerous for him, and we can’t really afford to lose a game. We’re playing a solid team, and they are probably going to make two draws with the white pieces.”

Chess Olympiad 2024 Round 2 Live: A note about how the Chess Olympiad works:

Since there are 196 teams competing in the open section and 184 teams in the women’s section, a full round robin event cannot be possible. This is why the Chess Olympiad is held using a  Swiss System. There are 11 rounds. And the Swiss System ensures that teams with similar points play against each other. This means that India are more likely to meet top teams like China, USA and Uzbekistan in the second half of the Olympiad in the open section. Similarly, the top seeded Indian women's team could meet strong teams like China, Georgia and Ukraine in the second half in the women's section.

What is the time control for each game at the Olympiad?

Matches at the Chess Olympiad are played in the classical time control with 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

Chess Olympiad 2024: India’s ‘strongest team ever’ heading to Budapest itching for gold at 45th Chess Olympiad

India’s chess Avengers are assembling in Budapest. Their mission: to win the gold medal at the Chess Olympiad, the most prestigious team competition in the sport.

An Indian team had won gold at the Olympiad before: but that was a shared one with Russia at the 2020 Online Chess Olympiad, where there was a different format used. India also has bronze medals from their campaigns in 2014 and 2022.

At the 2022 Olympiad in India, players like D Gukesh left their mark. But the 2024 Olympiad in Hungary’s capital could just be the coming-of-age event on the chessboard that India has been awaiting. (READ MORE)
