Chess Olympiad 2024 Open Section Round 8 Updates: The Indian women's team lost to Poland in the 8th round as Harika and Vaishali lost their battles while Divya Deshmukh won hers.

45th FIDE Chess Olympiad Round 8 2024 Updates: The Indian chess team has soundly defeated the Iranian team in the 8th round of the ongoing Chess Olympiad in Budapest with Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh winning with black pieces while Vidit Gujrathi claimed victory with white. In the final game, Praggnanandhaa was held to a draw as India won 3.5-0.5. The Indian team now has 16 points from eight games.

Meanwhile, in the women’s section Vaishali lost her game against Poland’s Monika Socko and Harika lost to Alina Kashlinskaya. While Divya Deshmukh won her game, Vantika Agrawal drew her game.

Chess Olympiad 2024 Round 8 Live: here's how Gukesh took down Parham

In a battle lasting 34 moves, Gukesh prevailed over Parham Maghsoodloo, who he had pipped to secure a spot at the prestigious Candidates tournament last year. 

Gukesh was in time trouble at certain points in the game, but managed to battle past that to force a resignation from the Iranian.

Chess Olympiad 2024 Round 8 Live: What a result for India

The Indian team defeated Iran 3.5-0.5 after victories for Arjun Erigaisi, Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi while Praggnanandhaa drew on the second board. 

The result means India are now on 16 points while Iran, who were second in the standings coming into the 8th round, are still on 13 match points!

Chess Olympiad 2024 Round 8 Live: Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa both down to single digits on the clock

Meanwhile, Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa both down to single digits on the clock. Parham Maghsoodloo has a full 10-minute advantage over Gukesh with 25 moves in the book. This means the 18-year-old who will play in the World Chess Championship later this year has to play 15 more moves in just over 14 minutes (including the 30 seconds you get as increment for each move).

Chess Olympiad 2024: India’s ‘strongest team ever’ heading to Budapest itching for gold at 45th Chess Olympiad

India’s chess Avengers are assembling in Budapest. Their mission: to win the gold medal at the Chess Olympiad, the most prestigious team competition in the sport.

An Indian team had won gold at the Olympiad before: but that was a shared one with Russia at the 2020 Online Chess Olympiad, where there was a different format used. India also has bronze medals from their campaigns in 2014 and 2022.

At the 2022 Olympiad in India, players like D Gukesh left their mark. But the 2024 Olympiad in Hungary’s capital could just be the coming-of-age event on the chessboard that India has been awaiting. (READ MORE)
