I am not trying to be anyone other than myself: Ben Stokes on comparison with Andrew Flintoff

Ben Stokes is flattered by comparisons with former England captain Andrew Flintoff but would prefer forging his own path while helping his team win more matches, the all-rounder has said after his team's win over South Africa in third Test.

After Ben Stokes helped England win the third Test against South Africa, comparisons with former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff have not stopped. His teammate Stuart Broad compared his for his scintillating hundred in the first innings and three wickets in the match.

Despite all this, Stokes has said that he doesn’t know what to say. Though he is flattered at the comparisons with former England captain, he wants to be himself.

“I don’t really know what to say to that,” Stokes told reporters. “It’s always nice being compared to that guy and some of the spells he produced for England were amazing to watch. But I am not trying to be anyone other than myself.”

While Stokes is clearly a batsman who is far better, Flintoff was more effective with the ball. In 79 Tests he played for England, Flintoff had 226 wickets. The 39-year-old had five centuries in Tests which has already been achieved by Stokes.

“All I’m trying to do is produce the moments for the team that can swing it our way and mean we are going to win,” Stokes said.

“I am not trying to live up to anyone else’s reputation. I am trying to do what I do and keep on putting in good performances.”

Stokes will now help England win the fourth Test against South Africa and also win the series 3-1. Even if they lose, England will only tie the series 2-2.
