MI vs GT: Raindrops are seen as Trent Boult and Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians speak during an IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium. (Sportzpics for IPL)Gujarat Titans captain and opening batter Shubman Gill cut an unhappy figure as the umpires did not stop play despite a light drizzle and heavy winds hitting the Wankhede Stadium in the second innings of the Mumbai Indians versus Gujarat Titans game in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday. With a strong wind blowing across the Wankhede Stadium, which sits next to the Arabian Sea on Marine Drive in Mumbai, there was a brief spell of rain around the third over of Gujarat Titans’ chase of 156.
The game was finally stopped and the covers were brought on with Gujarat needing 49 off 36 balls. At that stage, GT were eight runs ahead of the DLS par score, with the score after 14 overs reading 107/2.
With Jasprit Bumrah steaming in in the third over, with Gujarat at 11/1, Gill moved away from facing the third ball and then exchanged words with the umpire while gesticulating at his face, as it to say something had entered his eye. The umpires did not ask teams to retreat to the dugouts. The rain stopped shortly and the game was good to go on.
The rains made an appearance once more with Gujarat batting on 27/1 after 5.2 overs. Since minimum five overs constitutes a game, the DLS par score at this stage was 36/1.
“One can totally understand what the umpires are doing. They are doing the right thing,” cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar said in the JioHotstar commentary during the sixth over as the light rains returned but the umpires still refused to ask both sets of players to get off of the ground. Gavaskar explained that the rains were not heavy enough in his assessment to stop play.
To make matters worse for Gujarat, right after the sixth over ended, the Mumbai Indians took their time out.
For the second day in a row, unseasonal rain interrupted an Indian Premier League game. This comes a day after the IPL 2025 game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad was called off on Monday without a ball being bowled in the second innings.
Earlier on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert in Mumbai starting Tuesday, indicating the likelihood of thunderstorms coupled with light to moderate showers and lightning activity.
