Software giant Adobe announced on Thursday the availability of Photoshop for the web after over a year of beta testing. The popular editing tool, which uses generative artificial intelligence, marks Adobe’s first programme to be “deeply integrated” with AI.

The web version of Photoshop functions within any browser without the need to download or install the program. It is included as part of all paid Photoshop plans (starting at $9.99 per month) and will not be available as a free-to-use experience at launch. Users can sign up for a free seven-day trial.

Photoshop on the web has been integrated with generative AI, the latest buzzword in the tech space. The editing tool incorporates the generative AI product, Adobe Firefly, which launched as a beta earlier this year, aiming to create a tool that the company says will become a “co-pilot” to graphic design.

The web version of Photoshop gains access to AI features such as “Generative Fill” and “Generative Expand.” For example, the “Generative Fill” feature allows Photoshop users to add, expand, or remove unwanted items from images using a text prompt similar to those used by Dall-E and Midjourney. Other features coming to Photoshop on the web include the “Contextual Task Bar” feature, which suggests the most relevant steps to take in your workflow.

This feature was added to the desktop Photoshop app earlier this year. Photoshop on the web also includes popular desktop-equivalent features such as the patch tool, pen tool, smart object support, and polygonal lasso.

The web version of Photoshop offers a streamlined user experience with a redesigned layout. Adobe has gradually incorporated AI into its tools over the years, such as the background replacement tool in Photoshop. However, in recent months, the company has accelerated its initiatives to expand the role of AI in creating images and templates, making it easier to edit photos.

The decision to add generative AI to the widely used Photoshop programme comes at a time when artists have raised concerns that the AI has been trained on copyrighted artworks. Adobe has made it clear that the integration of AI into Photoshop is intended to assist users rather than replace humans
