Since its introduction in November 2022, OpenAI has constantly added new features to its AI chatbot – ChatGPT. While some of the features are available in the free version, most of them are limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.
The free version of ChatGPT, powered by GPT-3.5 lets users ask questions, write essays, solve basic problems, tell jokes, and more. But if you use the chatbot for complex tasks like coding and want more accurate responses, the paid version offers perks like faster response time, priority access during peak time and the option to use OpenAI’s latest large language model – GPT 4.

If you are considering upgrading to the paid version, here are some features that differentiate ChatGPT Plus from the free tier.
Faster response and less hallucinations
ChatGPT might quickly respond to your queries most of the time, but sometimes the free version of the chatbot may be slow to reply to your questions. This is where ChatGPT Plus have an advantage compared to the free version.
OpenAI says ChatGPT powered by GPT-4 offers faster response time and even when the server is overloaded, the chatbot will prioritise queries made by ChatGPT Plus subscribers.
Also, GPT-4 is less susceptible to hallucinations and makes fewer factual mistakes. However, users should always double-check facts and information generated by ChatGPT.

Access to GPT-4
One of the biggest differences between the free and paid version of ChatGPT is access to GPT-4. Compared to GPT-3.5, the new large language model is smarter, faster and more accurate.

Unlike GPT-3.5, GPT-4 can take images as input and answer queries with advanced reasoning capabilities. The new GPT model can also generate responses with up to 25,000 words, which is way higher than GPT-3.5’s 8,000 word limit.
Create Custom GPT
ChatGPT Plus offers access to Custom GPTs, a feature that allows users to create their very own GPT-powered applications even if they do not know coding. If you don’t know what to do with the feature, ChatGPT Plus lets you browse publicly created custom GPTs that excel at doing certain tasks.
To create a custom GPT, all you need to do is describe what you want the AI to do and tweak the responses. You can also upload documents that can be used as a knowledge base.
Ask ChatGPT to browse the internet for you
The free version of ChatGPT with GPT 3.5 is built on a limited data set and does not have access to information after January 2022. For example, if you ask the chatbot about GoogleGemini, the company’s answer to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot will reply that “there isn’t any widely known Google product or service named Google Gemini.”

However, ChatGPT Plus subscribers using GPT-4 have access to real-time information since the paid version of the chatbot can use Bing search to get the most current information.
Image Generator powered by DALL-E 3
ChatGPT Plus also offers access to a DALL-E 3-powered image generator. To use the feature, simply ask the chatbot to generate an image and describe what you want it to generate.
Similar to Bing Image Creator, the chatbot automatically generates multiple images, which can then be downloaded to your PC or phone. You can also add styles like realistic, lo-fi, digital art and more and ask the chatbot to modify the generated image according to your preference.
Analyse files on your PC or mobile
The basic version of ChatGPT requires users to manually enter data from a file if they want to analyse it, but with ChatGPT Plus, users have the option to directly upload files, which can then be analysed by the AI-powered chatbot.

ChatGPT Plus allows users to upload spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, research papers, PDFs and even photos. The feature is really useful as you can ask the chatbot to create a visual graph of numbers from an excel spreadsheet or proofread a certain document.
As for lengthy research papers, the chatbot can easily summarise the information for you and present it with bullet points, headlines and key takeaways.

Plugin store
ChatGPT Plus subscriptions also offer access to plugins, which can be used to ask the chatbot to do various tasks like shop on your behalf, book tickets and more. While these plugins will soon be replaced by the GPT store, some popular plugins include DocMaker, Expedia, Kayak, Wikipedia, Wolfram and VoxScript.
These plugins offer additional functionalities like searching transcripts on YouTube, getting information about current events, searching for flight tickets and rental places to name a few.

Access to the latest features
Another reason why you might want to use ChatGPT Plus is that OpenAI often updates its AI chatbot with new features. However, most of them are limited to the paid version, so those who want to experience the latest AI features may want to buy ChatGPT Plus.
