OpenAI’s ChatGPT is getting a new feature called ‘Memory’ that allows the AI-powered chatbot to store the “things you discuss across all chats”, making all your future chats easier since users will no longer have to reshare the information with the chatbot.

According to OpenAI, users will be in full control of the memories stored by ChatGPT. This means you can ask the AI chatbot to explicitly remember or forget things. There is also a toggle that lets you turn off the ‘Memory’ feature.

How does ChatGPT’s Memory feature work?

When having a conversation with ChatGPT, you can ask the chatbot to remember something you want it to or let it automatically store details from your chats. OpenAI also claims that the chatbot will get better as it remembers more of your conversations.

OpenAI says “ChatGPT’s memories evolve with your interactions and aren’t linked to specific conversations” and that deleting a conversation won’t delete the memory associated with it.

To disable the feature, open ChatGPT on the device of your choice, head over to the app ‘Settings’, click on Personalization and you will see an option named ‘Memory’. Turn the toggle off and you are good to go.

In case you want ChatGPT to forget about something, either tell it to do so or delete memories from the ‘Manage Memory’ option in the ‘Personalization’ section in ChatGPT settings.

Announced in February this year, the functionality was previously limited to a handful of testers, but OpenAI has now announced that the feature is now available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers except those living in Europe and Korea. However, users in these regions may be able to bypass these restrictions using a VPN.
