Google is testing a new functionality that lets users turn their research notes into an AI-generated podcast. The experimental feature, which is currently available within NotebookLM, the tech giant’s AI-powered note-taking app, can “summarise your material, make connections between topics, and banter back and forth.”
Dubbed Audio Overview, Google says the new functionality offers “a new way to turn your documents into engaging audio discussions.” In a blog post, the tech giant said that with a single click, two AI hosts can start a lively “deep dive” discussion based on your sources. Users can also download these AI-generated conversations.

According to The Verge, who tried the new NotebookLM feature, the AI hosts use modern phrases and sound like humans. However, the AI sometimes spelled out words and phrases like “P-L-U-S”.

To use the new feature, open one of your notebooks in NotebookLM, head over to open the Notebook guide and click on the “Generate” button to create an Audio Overview.
While the new feature may be a useful tool to engage users in your notes, Google notes that the functionality is still experimental and has some known limitations. For example, if you have a large notebook, it may take some minutes to generate an Audio Overview. Also, the AI-powered hosts are currently limited to English and may “sometimes introduce inaccuracies”, and that there’s no way to interrupt them.
