The internet is all about exploration, and Google Search has been at the forefront of search with its unmatched speed, diversity of information, and relevancy. The Alphabet Inc. company has been making strides in search with the infusion of Artificial Intelligence that is now enabling users to engage with search functionalities in a more meaningful way.

Google on Wednesday introduced two new features for millions of users worldwide. These features not only make search functions accessible but also offer a lot more information right at the fingertips. With its investments in AI, Google has developed new ways to express what one is looking for, and that too, in the most natural way. The two new features are Circle to Search and AI-powered overviews for multi-search in Lens.

Circle to Search: The cool new way to use the Internet

This feature lets you search for anything on your Android phone screen without having to switch applications. All it takes is a simple gesture – select what makes you curious by circling, highlighting, scribbling, or even tapping. This will open information about the object highlighted in the app itself.

For example, maybe you need help identifying a few items an influencer showed in their video but didn’t tag the brands. Simply long press the home button or navigation bar on your Android device to activate the Circle to Search. Select the item with your preferred gesture, like a pair of sunglasses, to quickly find similar options that you can shop from retailers across the web. Once done, you can simply swipe back to where you started.

According to Google, with its AI-powered upgrades and multisearch, the ability to search with text and images at the same time, users can easily understand concepts, ideas, or topics from helpful information that’s pulled from across the web. The feature is coming to select premium Android devices such as the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Series.

“Circle to Search, we think, is a meaningful step forward in helping people to express their needs, and to stay in there and their context stay where they are. And, multi-search is something I’m very excited about, especially in conjunction with the circle to search, allowing users to more naturally and intuitively express their needs,” Alistair Pott, Director, Product Management, Search App on Android told Indianexpress.com.

Users can simply point their camera and whatever they see or upload a picture or screenshot and ask a question about it. This will yield instant insights powered by generative AI. This feature is currently launching in the US, and there is no Search Labs enrollment needed. Those outside the US and have opted for SGE can preview this experience in the Google App. However, they will be required to access AI-powered overviews on multisearch results within Circle to Search

According to Google, this gives you the ability to ask more complex or nuanced questions about what you see, and quickly find and understand key information. “Our goal is to make AI helpful for everyone, so as we continue to experiment and uncover which applications of gen AI are most helpful, we’ll introduce them into Search more broadly, like we’re doing now for multisearch results,” the company said in its statement.

Search safety and privacy

The search functionalities developed with the interest of the user at the centre are also equipped with Google’s approach towards data security to ensure a trustworthy experience. The key here is user data remains on the device until explicitly selected, triggering a Google search. Moreover, the feature allows easy removal of the last 15 minutes of search history for user privacy and control.

“We have done a few things, one of which is that when you invoke Circle to Search, when you call it up, everything is happening on the device. So we’re scanning what the user’s looking at. That is all remaining on the device, But, it is only after the user explicitly selects something that we send that to search and execute a Google search. So that’s one thing. And then the second thing is that we have brought very quick and easy features into that to remove the last 15 minutes of your search. So you can after you’ve done a search, it’s very, very simple to remove that search from your search history,” Pott explained.

The latest updates make Search more natural and intuitive, however, Google maintains that this is just the tip of the iceberg. In order to try the latest capabilities, the search giant is encouraging users to enroll in its Search (available in 7 languages across 120 countries) and to opt into the SGE experiment.
