Google at its ongoing I/O 2024 developers conference announced that its latest generative AI model — Gemini 1.5 Pro is now available for Gemini Advanced subscribers. Besides, Google has also added several new capabilities to the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, which is now available in over 35 languages in over 150 countries.

Sissie Hsiao, Vice President & General Manager, Gemini Experiences and Google Assistant, said, “Gemini is designed to be your personal AI assistant — one that’s conversational, intuitive and helpful. Whether you use it in the app or through the web experience, Gemini can help you tackle complex tasks, and it can take action on your behalf.”

Google is also deeply integrating Gemini into the Calendar, Tasks, and Keep, similar to the Maps and YouTube, allowing users to leverage the generative AI capabilities without leaving those apps.

Gemini 1.5 Pro leverages its multimodal capability, and also gets a big improvement in image understanding, where one can click a picture of a dish at a restaurant, and the AI can describe the recipe, or it can also solve a math problem from a textbook with step-by-step explanation.

The new capabilities of the Gemini 1.5 Pro model include a larger context window with up to 1 million tokens. This is touted to be the longest available context window on any consumer chatbot in the world, allowing users to scan large documents or books with up to 1,500 pages and the ability to summarise up to 100 emails at once.

In the coming days, Google is even adding the ability to handle an hour-long video content and codebase with over 30,000 lines of code.

Besides this, Google is also enabling users to upload files directly from a device or via Google Drive into Gemini to get quick facts, insights, and answers. Here Gemini will act like a data analyst, and can even build custom chats and visualisation models from the uploaded data.

Google also claims that all the files and conversations happening on the Gemini will stay private, and will not be used to train the model.

The tech giant is also adding Gemini to Google Messages with a new update called Gemini Live. Currently rolling out to Advanced subscribers, Gemini can now deliver human-like conversations within the Messages app in both audio and text format.

Advanced users can also create customised versions of Gemini AI called Gems, which according to Google “You can create any Gem you dream up: a gym buddy, sous chef, coding partner or creative writing guide,” which are easy to set up, and can be used for specific needs.
