Since its launch, OpenAI’s sensational chatbot ChatGPT has been on a roll. With each passing day, the chatbot stunned the world with its boundless capabilities. From writing comprehensive essays to offering career advice, ChatGPT seems to have become a household name.

This meteoric rise of the chatbot has also prompted several tech players to innovate and come out with worthy rivals. After Google Bard, Ernie Bot, now a new open-sourced AI chatbot is on the horizon.

AI startup, Hugging Face, has unveiled a 30-billion-parameter open-sourced AI chatbot called HuggingChat. The latest from Hugging Face has reportedly been designed to compete with ChatGPT.

What is HuggingChat?

HuggingChat has been developed by the Open Assistant project under the German nonprofit LAION – Large-scale Artificial Intelligence Open Network. The makers claim that the new chatbot aims to be a ‘versatile, customisable, and efficient assistant accessible to all’.

For starters, HuggingChat has an interface much similar to ChatGPT. However, it has a simple homepage with the name and a small description that reads, “Making the best open-source AI chat models available to everyone.” On the left panel, just like ChatGPT, HuggingChat displays prompt history, Theme, Feedback, and About & Privacy.

We tested HuggingChat and ChatGPT with the prompt – “Write a 100-word essay on India” and below are the responses.

HuggingChat: India is a vast country with a rich history spanning over thousands of years. From ancient civilizations like the Indus Valley Civilization to the rule of the Mughal Empire and British Raj, India has seen countless dynasties rise and fall. Today, as the seventh-largest economy in the world and one of the fastest-growing nations globally, India is at the forefront of innovation and progress while still holding onto its traditional values. Its diverse culture, languages, religions, and cuisine make it a fascinating place to explore and discover. With so much to offer, from bustling metropolises to serene beaches and lush forests, India truly deserves its reputation as a land of contrasts and wonders.

ChatGPT: India is a vast country located in South Asia, bordered by the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea. It is the seventh-largest country in the world by land area and the second-most populous, with over 1.3 billion people. India is known for its diverse culture, rich history, and ancient civilization. It has a variety of languages, religions, and traditions, making it a melting pot of cultures. India is also known for its contributions to mathematics, science, and philosophy, and is home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, the Himalayas, and the Ganges River.

Accuracy in responses

While some reports claimed that Hugging Chat was prone to inaccurate responses, we checked with the prompt – Who is the third prime minister of India? The initial response was confusing and long, and the second was just about right, the chatbot also apologised for the error.

My apologies for the confusion earlier. After extensive research using reputable sources, I can confirm that there were two interim PMs between Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. The second interim PM, Gulzarilal Nanda, served twice for brief periods following the deaths of both Shastri and Nehru. Therefore, Mrs. Indira Gandhi was actually the third woman to serve as PM after Rani Lakshmi Bai and Anandibai Gopal Joshi, all belonging to the Indian National Congress Party. Again, sorry for the error,” read the response from HuggingChat.

It seems the makers of HuggingChat have placed necessary guardrails to prevent misuse. We tested it by asking if it how could help us create an explosive, and this is how it responded. “Sorry, I cannot assist with instructions on creating explosives or dangerous weapons. My programming prioritizes ethical considerations and promoting safety and well-being. Is there something else I can help with?” said the chatbot.

HuggingChat is currently available to test through the web interface and can be integrated with existing apps and services via Hugging Face API. HuggingChat can write code, draft emails, and even compose rap. The current model is based on OpenAssistant LLaMa 30B SFT 6. The chatbot also warns users with a caveat that ‘Generated content may be inaccurate or false.’

Last week, developers Stability AI, known for the Stable Diffusion image generator, introduced its large language model – Stability LM. An open-source model, the alpha version of Stable LM is a 3 billion and 7 billion parameter model. Reportedly, the latest model will be followed by 15 billion, 30 billion, 65 billion, and 175 billion models in the future.
