With layoffs on the rise in all parts of the world, landing a job interview can be hard. There are a lot of reasons why people aren’t able to get a job, but according to LinkedIn, a part of the problem is that many are applying for jobs that they don’t even qualify for.

As part of the solution, LinkedIn is rolling out a new “Job Match” feature, which it says leverages the power of generative AI to give users a detailed summary besides job listing to help them understand how qualified they are for a given job.

In a statement to Engadget, LinkedIn’s product manager Rohan Rajiv said that, unlike the simple keyword matching algorithm, the new tool aims to understand the experience you have and see how it fits in a particular job description, with the end goal being discouraging people from applying for jobs they may not be qualified for.

The new “Job Match” tool will be available for free users, but LinkedIn Premium subscribers will be able to access detailed information about their job match level. Rajiv also said that over time, the new feature will make it easier for recruiters who go through thousands of applications to choose good candidates who often get overlooked.

LinkedIn is also launching a recruitment AI agent for small businesses, which also happens to be free. The company says these products were built using its in-house AI technology and data available on the platform, but over time, it may also include data from other sources.

While this sounds good on paper, it might make landing a job even harder than before since multiple people eligible for the job will be applying for the same opening. Rajiv also told the publication that early tests for Job Match have suggested that a “non-trivial chunk” of the problem is “more solvable than we think.”
