Meta is working on a new feature that lets users create AI-generated images of themselves in amusing avatars and settings. The feature is called ‘Imagine Me’ and the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave people a glimpse of it by posting a reel showing how it is done.

The Imagine Me AI feature is currently being rolled out in beta for users only in the US. In a blog post, Meta said that users would be able to create and post their imagined AI images on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp as part of their feed, stories, in comments, or in message windows.

How to use Meta’s ‘Imagine Me’ AI feature?

To get started, users would have to type ‘Imagine Me’ in a chat with Meta AI. Then, they will be asked to upload three selfies of their face from the front, left side, and right side. While the selfies are being uploaded and processed, the screen informs users that they can delete their photos from Meta AI settings anytime.

Once the selfies have been uploaded, users can once give a prompt to Meta AI such as “Imagine me as a gladiator” or “Imagine me in a video game”.

From there, you can share the AI-generated images with friends and family, Meta said in its blog post. If users are not happy with the AI-generated image of themselves, they also have the option to edit or regenerate the image by asking the AI model to change what they want.

Currently, AI-generated images that are created using Meta’s own tools are tagged with a watermark that says ‘Imagined with AI’. For other AI-generated images, Meta is likely to detect and tag them with a label that reads ‘AI info’, as per the company’s updated policy.

Other Meta AI upgrades

Aside from the ‘Imagine Me’ feature, Meta is also looking to let users fine tune their imagined images through an Edit with AI button which is expected to be rolled out next month.

Furthermore, the tech giant said that its AI offering is now available in more languages including Hindi and Hindi-Romanised Script. Additionally, WhatsApp users now have an option to switch to Meta’s more advanced open-source AI model, Llama 3.1 405B.

“Llama 405B’s improved reasoning capabilities make it possible for Meta AI to understand and answer your more complex questions, especially on the topics of math and coding. You can get help on your math homework with step-by-step explanations and feedback, write code faster with debugging support and optimisation suggestions, and master complex technical and scientific concepts with expert instruction,” the company said.

Meta AI is already available in apps, on the web, and via its smart glasses jointly developed with Ray Ban. However, the company said that it will be integrating its AI virtual assistant with its mixed reality headset series, Quest, in an experimental mode for users in the US and Canada.

“Meta AI will replace the current Voice Commands on Quest, allowing you to control your headset hands-free, get answers to questions, stay up to date with real-time information, check the weather and more. You can also use Meta AI with Vision in Passthrough to ask questions about things you see in your physical surroundings,” it said.
