A day after Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s interview, where he appeared unfazed about the rising competition in AI, now it seems OpenAI is set to march past Google. Pichai emphasised how Google Search will continue to be different from its peers, and how he envisions Google’s ad-based model persisting with AI integration to search.
Google, which has been dominating search for over two decades, is the undisputed leader. However, all that may change soon. Bloomberg has reported that OpenAI is building its own GPT-powered search engine to challenge Google. But what is this new AI-powered search from OpenAI? Here, we assemble all that we know about OpenAI’s upcoming product.
Based on reports, users will be able to ask questions and receive answers along with cited sources from the internet. The new platform will likely include images. For instance, if a user may want to know how to replace a tyre, they will be able to see step-by-step diagrams with images. This is a radically different approach from how conventional search engines work.
While there is no confirmation yet, it is rumoured that users will be able to use it soon. It is also reported that when the search engine finally launches, users will be able to try it out through – search.chatgpt.com. Visiting this at present would yield nothing.
Users get a list of relevant results when they use conventional search engines, and they would have to sift through several pages to find what they are looking for. AI search engines reverse-engineer that process by automatically showing the information that one is hoping to find. These engines would be faster and more precise when throwing up results to search queries.
OpenAI is not the first to bring an AI search engine, as presently the space is dominated by Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini. There are other AI-powered search engines such as You.com, perplexity.ai, Waldo, etc.
